Now that the Buffalo Waterfront is finally starting to see some real improvements, it’s time for LaSalle Park to be added to the momentum. Forever and a day, LaSalle Park has been the shunned park – the park that was left behind. There were times when it looked as if this waterfront park was going to be invigorated, but then things fell apart, as administrations changed hands.

In recent years, LaSalle Park has seen incremental improvements – shots in the arm – the dog park, a skate park, and a pool investment, but there has been no master plan or vision, until now, thanks to the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation (RCWJRF). RCWJRF made a $100 million commitment to support Western New York’s Parks & Trails, including $50 million to transform LaSalle Park into the future Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park.

The Imagine LaSalle Initiative, a partnership between the City of Buffalo, the University at Buffalo Regional Institute (UBRI) and Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation (RCWJRF), has been breathing new life into the 90-acre park, by working with community stakeholders and community ambassadors, to roll out a Community Vision Report (released last October).

“From day one, thanks to the Wilson Foundation, this has been and will continue to be a community-driven effort to create a world-class waterfront park for the daily enjoyment of Buffalo residents, while also attracting visitors from across the region, the nation and around the globe,” Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown said. “This model reflects and embraces the thousands of ideas voiced during last summer’s Imagine LaSalle community outreach initiative, as well as this winter’s public design workshops, and is a giant step toward the realization of what Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park will be.”

Adding to the momentum, this past December landscape architectural firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA) was invited to participate in the process, by leading with the design of the park. MVVA worked with the community to come up with the various design aspects that we now see in the renderings put forth. At the same time, technical stakeholders such as the Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, Buffalo Dept. of Public Works, and Parks & Streets were also kept in the loop.

“One of the primary things we tried to do with this vision is to take advantage of the generosity of the space available to us, to make LaSalle much more interesting and diverse,” said MVVA President & CEO Michael Van Valkenburgh. “It’s currently very flat – a little too flat. We’ve focused on adding topography – hills, valleys, improved waterfront access, a lagoon with native Western New York vegetation, more dramatic views and a new children’s playground – all of which will enhance the kinds of spaces available to visitors.”

Along with fixing up a number of the park’s popular athletic fields, a few new key aspects will be added to the park, including a 5K athletic loop, more than 3 miles of cycling paths, and an enhanced dog run. There will also be an effort to allow cars to park closer to their desired destinations.

“The design vision we see before us today is the result of a process that has engaged the vision and aspirations of neighborhood residents and citizens across Buffalo,” said Robert G. Shibley, dean of the School of Architecture and Planning. “As the design progresses over the next 18 months, we will continue to take inspiration from the community to ensure Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park stands as a landmark to quality design in service to the public.”

Moving forward, over the next 18 months, the design will be examined and tweaked accordingly to accommodate for technical studies, site limitations, and funding. There will also be a number of community meetings, via a design roadshow, where the public can weigh in on various park aspects. These events will be held at the Buffalo Central Library (May 4-8), Canalside (May 9-14), LaSalle Park (May 16-19), and Northland Workforce Training Center (May 20-24). Location addresses and viewing hours are available at www.ImagineLaSalle.org.

“There has been incredible collaboration across multiple entities and organizations to make the most of this remarkable opportunity,” said RCWJRF President and CEO David Egner. “It has been inspiring for all partners to see and will, in the end, make this park realize its full potential as a neighborhood and regional destination.”

In the end, the park will offer more things to more people. Not only will there be play facilities, there will also be more natural elements such as sheltered valleys and constructed wetlands, with formal allées (tree- or shrub-lined paths), and added amenities such as paths, roads, lighting, comfort stations and concessions to attract more people for longer stays. There will also be an “iconic pedestrian bridge over The 190, which will be considered the ‘front door’ of the park.

Along with all of the various new LaSalle Park visions, MVVA also added a sort of ‘wish list’ that it would like to see addressed in the future, including a potential 4th Street Park, Virginia-Carolina Street Interchange and Waterfront Park, as well as a reimagined Front Park.

“These concepts demonstrate other opportunities for the city to consider as a way to build added connections and extend the reach and access of this iconic waterfront park into its neighborhoods,” added Van Valkenburgh. “The potential that exists within this majestic space is tremendous, and our entire team has found this process to be incredibly rewarding and inspiring.”

As for the cost of the LaSalle Park project in its current state, there is nothing in stone, although $65-70 million in funding has been identified for capital projects. The MVVA team says that the public can expect a fluid timeline, with a potential groundbreaking in Spring 2022, and an estimated completion date of Spring 2024.

Monday, September 9th: Steve ’n’ Seagulls “Grainsville North American Tour 2019” w/ ClusterPluck

In the current flux of the music business, the new kings of the realm are the YouTube vloggers and cover artists playing the classic tracks of yesteryear. Steve ‘n’ Seagulls sort of unintentionally figured out how to be both.

The band’s version of “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC has been especially popular, clocking in over 83 million views on YouTube.

By nature, Steve ’n’ Seagulls is a Finnish band playing bluegrass(ish) versions of classic hard rock tracks (and a few originals in the mix) with an astonishing arsenal of acoustic instruments, including accordion, banjo, Cajon, double bass, and drums. Dressed in overalls, beaver hats and other clodhopper paraphernalia, they look like preposterous stereotypes of your average moonshining, tobacco-chewing corn-fed rednecks of bygone days.

About Future Thieves: Future Thieves was formed in late 2013 after a timely split between former bands. Elliot Collett (vocals, guitars, keys) enlisted band members Gianni Gibson (drums) and Nick Goss (bass, keys, bgvs) to play along with recordings done in Los Angeles in the months prior. Austin McCool (guitars) quickly joined rank, after playing with Collett and Goss in various projects. Future Thieves began writing, recording, and touring the United States in 2014.

The band quickly formed a distinct sound, blending alternative pop vocal melodies with driving guitars and intricate rhythms. Their debut LP Horizon Line was released independently on October 23, 2015, and the song “Horizon Line” landed at #26 on Spotify’s US Viral 50 chart. Future Thieves spent the next year and change spreading their music in venues all across the States and Europe, hitting major festivals including Loufest, Bonnaroo, Summerfest, SXSW, Forecastle, Live on the Green, and WAM along the way. Live At Blue Rock was recorded in Wimberley, TX and released on January 13, 2017. From these live recordings, “Ghosts” was exclusively showcased on TeamCOCO.com. The band quickly released the stand-alone single and video for “Sucker” as an indication of what was to come. Featuring smooth synths and guitar-driven pop, Collett’s vocal melody demanded center stage. The song was premiered on Billboard.com and AltPress.com, and the video was exclusively streamed with Jimmy Fallon.

Future Thieves wrote and recorded the well-anticipated follow up to Horizon Line throughout 2017. The second full-length album is slated for release in the earlier half of 2018.

The Go Rounds have used Psychedelic Americana Pop, Twang-Rock & Jelly-Roll, and ‘bits of all your favorite bands exploded into rock n roll confetti’ to describe the sprawling landscape that is their sound. Fingerpicked hollow body guitar makes space for slashing fuzz tones as down tempo, introspective ambiance opens into synth-led dance pop. Spellbinding vocals weave lush textures through a field of deconstructed genres – a variegated sonic voyage – changing and returning like the seasons, flourishing and weathering the Beauty and the Fury. The result is an experience that is at once accessible, engaging, evocative and surprising– the comfort of a sedan and the exhilaration of driving fast on a loose gravel road.

The Larkin Square Author Series is pleased to present Buffalo News writer Mark Sommer in conversation with best selling novelist Lauren Belfer on Thursday, November 12th at 5:30 pm in Larkin Square.

Mark is the author of the new non-fiction book Rocky Colavito: Cleveland’s Iconic Slugger . The book details the life of famed Cleveland baseball great, Rocky Calavito, Jr.

Sommer’s comprehensive biography of “the Rock”—the first in more than half a century—recounts his origins in an Italian immigrant family, his close friendships with Herb Score and Roger Maris, and his rise through the minors to become one of the Cleveland Indians’ most beloved players. Colavito retired with the third-most home runs by a right-handed batter in American League history.

Mark Sommer is an award winning journalist for the Buffalo News. His writing in the News covers development, urban planning, the waterfront and culture. Sommer grew up as an avid Yankees baseball fan. Writing this book was an opportunity for Sommer to revisit his childhood passion.

Buffalo native, Lauren Belfer will be returning to her hometown for her seventh consecutive talk in Larkin Square. Belfer is the author of the best selling novels, City of Light, and After the Fire and A Fierce Radiance.

Friends, Belfer and Sommer will talk about Sommer’s new book and writing in general. A “Q and A” along with a book signing will follow their talk. Books will be available for purchase at the event, courtesy of Talking Leaves. The Filling Station will offer refreshments available for purchase.

Larkin Square Author Talks are free and open to the public, no reservations needed. They are presented by KeyBank and sponsored by Independent Health. Parking is free in Larkin Square and the surface lots across the street.

Thursday, September 12 DSP Shows Presents Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue live in Asbury Hall 7pm Doors, 8pm Show Tickets: On Sale Fri 7/19 12noon – $39.50 in advance, $45.00 day

Trombone Shorty’s new album opens with a dirge, but if you think the beloved bandleader, singer, songwriter and horn-blower born Troy Andrews came here to mourn, you got it all wrong. That bit of beautiful New Orleans soul—”Laveau Dirge No. 1,” named after one of the city’s most famous voodoo queens—shows off our host’s roots before Parking Lot Symphony branches out wildly, wonderfully, funkily across 12 diverse cuts. True to its title, this album contains multitudes of sound—from brass band blare and deep-groove funk, to bluesy beauty and hip-hop/pop swagger—and plenty of emotion all anchored, of course, by stellar playing and the idea that, even in the toughest of times, as Andrews says, “Music brings unity.”

Starlight’s Side-By-Each Exhibition Series Presents: “Beneath the Pines” Artwork by Daniel Galas alongside Starlight Artists’ Ron Steele and Steve Borgisi

Daniel Galas: Beneath The Pines is a series of mixed media drawings on paper with soft pastels as the primary medium. They were created en plein air (in the open air) from direct observation in various locations around the Buffalo area like Ellicott Creek Park, Amherst State Park, and Tifft Nature Preserve.

These drawing are visual meditations. They are the byproduct of contemplating the sights, sounds, and overall feeling of natural environments. Stylistically they represent a convergence of artistic and musical styles that have moved me deeply. This series reflects my love of jazz and blues, Sumi E painting, Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, and Outsider Art.

My hope is that the audience will feel the wonder and tranquility that I felt while creating these drawings. I wish to turn the audience on to the natural world and open excite their imagination, stimulate they’re senses, and still the mind.

Steve Borgisi: Steve came to Starlight to retire from his job, but stopping work is the last thing he has done. Steve uses clay, pastel and paint with quiet determination. The expressive lines and colors, like his favorites red and brown, in his pastel work, evoke a sense of romantic storytelling. Steve draws inspiration from the other talented artists at Starlight and uses his own life and whatever is on his mind as a springboard for his art. Imaginative elements in his compositions include colorful sidewalks filled with people from his youth and his other cherished subject: cars. “I like drawing cars…cars are often on my mind”. Steve has been embroidering burlap into small tapestries. He has ideas for larger pieces such as a tablecloth comprised of smaller pieces stitched together.

Ron Steele: Ron draws and paints people and objects. His favorite singers, bandleaders, presidents, first ladies and other celebrities are sources of inspiration, recalling memories of watching television and listening to the “hi fi.” Ron’s experience with making art began when he was in 8th grade. He first drew cartoon figures, but later took a liking to illustrating cars such as the Bonneville and the Grand Prix. His stylish approach is rendered with a fluid linearity, and this technique is also presented in his portraits. As well, Ron is skilled with crochet and enjoys the collaborative process of making prints. One of his goals is to show his art at established art galleries and other venues.

Saturday, September 14th: The Crystal Method Method w/ special guests Dj Oddity -Doors: 8:00pm, show: 9:00pm -Tickets: $20 ADV/$25 DOS -Ages: 18 About The Crystal Method: A lot can happen in twenty

Throughout the past two decades, the musical landscape has continually merged, morphed, and matrixed, fractured in countless directions while intersecting at the most unexpected points. Electronic music underwent a renaissance in the aughts, rising out of the warehouses and blank spaces and overtaking the biggest festival fields in the world. THE CRYSTAL METHOD followed a similar trajectory since their formation in 1993. The Grammy Award®-nominated, platinum-certified trailblazing duo—Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland—set the stage for the genre-mashing electronic sounds that fuel the current zeitgeist.

Now, their exclusive, limited edition 20th Anniversary Signature Box Set houses this sonic story. Including vinyl of their five full-length studio albums—Vegas [1997], Tweekend [2001], Legion of Boom [2004], Divided By Night [2009], and The Crystal Method [2014]—and an unreleased Rarities collection, it provides a comprehensive glance at their legacy thus far. Most importantly, the process nodded to the group’s diehard audience from the beginning.

“Our fans couldn’t get a lot of our old vinyl,” Ken explains. “We would see copies of Vegas going for hundreds of dollars because they were out-of-print. In the last year, we thought, ‘Why don’t we do a complete box set of all our studio albums?’ Up until Tweekend, we did all of our mixes on digital audio tapes or DATs. We have a big collection of these that are numbered chronologically. While searching for the final “Raraties,” we combed through all of our old DATs. We had forgotten about so many cool tracks and alternate mixes, it was really cool to go back in time.”

“People kept asking us for that early vinyl,” adds Scott. “There’s something romantic about taking a record out of a sleeve, putting the needle down, walking away, and listening to an album. We love the process of writing an entire album. That’s something we want to preserve.”

THE CRYSTAL METHOD limited the box set to just 1,000 copies in order to provide an unrivaled experience for listeners. They remastered each album and printed on high quality vinyl. Vegas and Tweekend boast their iconic and original out-of-production cover design while the album art for Legion of Boom, Divided By Night, and The Crystal Method are limited editions exclusive to this box set. Each box is numbered and autographed and includes original tour stickers and laminated, autographed All Access passes from the Vegas tour.

“Anytime we did a new record, we didn’t want to repeat ourselves,” says Scott. “We wanted to shift things up a little bit. The goal was to sound like us but try different things. We weren’t afraid of working with people who were out of our comfort zone and in other genres. We loved the idea of evolving.”

That shared vision of evolution hatched in the most unlikely of places. Scott and Ken had independently started making music on their own during the early nineties. However, a chance encounter in the break room of a supermarket where they both worked would set them on this course.

“I have no idea why, but Scott brought his drum machine to work,” laughs Ken. “Who does that?”

“There was nothing else to do,” answers Scott. “Ken happened to walk into the room that day, and it was the strangest thing. Neither of us knew we were working on music. By chance, this fortuitous occasion changed everything.”

Their first singles would be released only on vinyl followed by Vegas, which would become certified platinum by the RIAA. In between releasing albums and never-ending tours, the group’s demand amplified within the film and television worlds. They delivered the smash “(Can’t You) Trip Like I Do” with Filter’s Richard Patrick for the gold-selling Spawn soundtrack, wrote the theme song for Bones, scored the indie film “London” and also scored the J.J. Abrams-produced Almost Human for Fox. They also scored characters for The League of Legends video game, and contributed music to everything from Real Steel to Fast & Furious 6, along the way working with Danny Elfman, Tom Morello, LeAnn Rimes, Scott Weiland, Metric’s Emily Haines, LMFAO, and even film star Milla Jovovich. Legion of Boom notched a 2004 Grammy Award nomination for “Best Dance/Electronic Album”—during the category’s first year. They also received another Grammy nomination for Divided By Night in 2009, while delivering unforgettable sets on the stages of Electric Daisy Carnival, Coachella, Lollapalooza, and HFStival to name a few.

“Well, we like it when people get goosebumps listening to our records,” Ken leaves off. “We try to make music that invokes not just feelings, but gives you a physical reaction. It’s like a good workout. It can be serious, and it can be uplifting. It’s the whole spectrum.”

“If our music helps listeners get through something, that’s the best thing,” concludes Scott. “Hopefully, this vinyl collection will bring some smiles, memories, and good times back to those who have found something in our music over the years.”

Buffalo native, artist, and small business owner Tanya Zabinski has just published her first book, Peace, Love, Action!: Everyday Acts of Goodness from A to Z. She’ll be at the store to talk about her book and work, and to sign copies. Caffe Aroma, adjoining Talking Leaves, will have a display of her work on its walls during the event. The book is described as an invitation to young readers to roll up their sleeves, get inspired, and take action to build a sustainable, just, and loving world, an illustrated A-Z of everyday actions that make a peaceful, fun, and vibrant world. It has an introduction by Ani DiFranco, and has received advance praise from Jane Goodall (“…perfectly embodies one of the key messages that I am always trying to get across to children around the world–that every day we live on this planet, we make some impact–and we have a choice as to what sort of difference we make.” ) to acclaimed children’s author and illustrator Tomie de Paola (“…a much-needed book for the middle-grade reader–and for teachers to use to introduce exemplary people and concepts. Stunning, woodcut-like artwork puts the frosting on this cake!”).

Tanya Zabinski lives and works in the hills south of Buffalo with her husband and two sons. The operate their small clothing art printing business Planet Love out of their home; Tanya’s designs are seen all over the world. She and her husband are also co-founders of the Elmwood Festival of the Arts.

About Defunk: Canadian born Logan Anderson, better known by his stage name Defunk, has made a distinct name for himself in the electronic music scene with his live keyboard infused bass music. Defunk’s unique fusion of funk, blues, soul and heavy bass music has proven him to be a true connoisseur of genre blending. His innovative style has created a path for fans of all genres to venture into the bass music scene…and a niche that has left him virtually untouched. He constantly pushes the boundaries of what bass music can be with a live performance element that has captivated audiences all over.

The versatility Defunk delivers in both his DJ sets and live performances has caught the attention of Pretty Lights, GRiZ and Gramatik. With a constantly changing set and rapidly expanding discography, Defunk consistently constructs a show brimming with allure and absolute magic, and has plenty of collaborations and genre bending music in the works for 2019.

About Marvel Years: Cory Wythe, the producer and guitarist better known as Marvel Years, has found a welcome place for himself within the increasingly popular glitch-hop / electro-soul dance music scene. In just a short period of time, his progression has become outright impossible to ignore. Much more than your average DJ/producer, Marvel Years incorporates electric guitar in his live performances. His approach to blending electronic beats and shredding soulful guitar on his original tracks and remixes creates a sound that is a unique hybrid of EDM combing glitch, retro-funk, classic rock, soul, jazz and hip-hop. “Classic rock has been a huge influence on me,” Wythe explains. “I love breathing new life into those older songs. I think that’s a good medium for bringing new listeners into my music because they can relate to that stuff. I improvise (on live guitar) over a lot of my stuff.”

Tuesday, September 17th: Brant Bjork & Ecstatic Vision -Doors: 7:00pm, show: 8:00pm -Tickets: $15 ADV/$20 DOS -Ages: 18 About Brant Bjork: Brant Bjork has spent over a quarter-century at the epicenter

About Brant Bjork: Brant Bjork has spent over a quarter-century at the epicenter of Californian desert rock. From cutting his teeth alongside Fatso Jetson’s Mario Lalli in hardcore punkers De-Con to drumming and composing on Kyuss’ landmark early albums, to propelling the seminal fuzz of Fu Manchu from 1994-2001 while producing other bands, putting together offshoot projects like Ché, embarking on his solo career as a singer, guitarist and bandleader, founding his own record label and more, his history is a winding narrative of relentless, unflinching creativity.

For someone so outwardly laid back, he’s never really taken a break. And while Bjork has shown different sides of himself on albums like his funk-laden 1999 solo debut, Jalamanta, the mellow Local Angel (2004), 2007’s mostly-acoustic Tres Dias, and heavier rockers Somera Sól (2007), Gods & Goddesses (2010) and the two most recent outings with The Low Desert Punk Band, he’s maintained a natural representation of himself in his material, whether that’s coming across in the Thin Lizzy-isms of the faux-full-band 2002 release Brant Bjork and the Operators (actually just Bjork playing mostly by himself) or the weedy, in-the-jam-room spirit of “Dave’s War” from Tao of the Devil. When you’re listening to Brant Bjork, you know it, because there’s no one else who sounds quite like him.

That fact and years of hard touring have positioned Brant Bjork as an ambassador for the Southern California desert and the musical movement birthed there in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. As underground interest has surged in recent years, Bjork has been a pivotal figurehead, realigning with his former Kyuss bandmate John Garcia to drum and write in Kyuss Lives!/Vista Chino, celebrating and building on that legacy while giving a new generation of fans the chance to see it happen in real-time.

Having told his story in films like Kate McCabe’s Sabbia (2006) and the documentaries Such Hawks Such Hounds (2008) and Lo Sound Desert (2015), he’s represented desert rock at home and abroad with no less honesty than that which he poured into the music helping to create it. The same impulse led to the founding of his Desert Generator festival which transformed into Stoned and Dusted, an annual festival held in Pioneertown, CA, with an international reach capturing the intimacy and timeless aura of the desert culture in a secret desert location, and an evolution that looks to continue into the foreseeable future.

Bjork’s work, with any project, has always had a rebellious sensibility. He’s always walked his own path. But more, his career through Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Ché, Vista Chino, and his crucial solo work has been about freedom through rock and roll, attained by the truest representation of the person and the place as art. This, along with a whole lot of groove, is what has helped Brant Bjork define desert rock as a worldwide phenomenon, and whatever comes next, it is what will continue to make him its most indispensable practitioner.

LETTUCE is (a) the prime ingredient in a salad, (b) a slang for cash, (c) a green herb that can be smoked, (d) a genre-busting six-member funk/jazz/soul/jam/psychedelic/hip-hop/avant-garde/experimental collective formed in 1992 by four alumni of the prestigious Berklee College Of Music, or (e) all of the above.

If you answered “e,” then you’re on to the ever-changing musical palette and all-inclusive goals of LETTUCE’s sixth studio album, Elevate, and its ongoing re-interpretation of the band’s name as “Let Us.” In their earliest days as students, they would roam the cities of the Northeast, and implore others to “Let Us play.” Starting with their 2002 debut album, the phrase has been affixed to their first four albums, as in (Let Us) Outta Here (2002), (Let Us) Rage! (2008), (Let Us) Fly! (2012) and (Let Us) Crush (2015). Elevate (2019) is the band’s first studio album since 2016’s Mt. Crushmore and the follow-up to its 2017 live effort, Witches Stew.

Nick Lowe has made his mark as a producer (Elvis Costello – Graham Parker – Pretenders – The Damned), songwriter of at least three songs you know by heart, short-lived career as a pop star, and a lengthy term as a musicians’ musician. But in his current ‘second act’ as a silver-haired, tender-hearted but sharp-tongued singer-songwriter, he has no equal. Los Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental. Using the music of the Ventures, The Shadows, and with Link Wray andDick Dale as a jumping off point, the band has taken their unique, high energy brand of original rock & roll around the world. Clad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks, the “Jackets” have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums, thousands of concerts and dozens of films and TV shows.

BUFFALO — Last year, many of Western New York’s most powerful women gathered for a new conference: “Transformational Leadership: Women in Power.” The networking event was so popular that it sold out, and many of the women in attendance —and many others who were unable to attend — have waited to see when another such conference would be held.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, the “Transformational Leadership” series returns with a new focus: “Professional Bravery – Define and Achieve Your Goals.” As with last year’s event, the conference will bring together leaders in business, medicine, law, and education for a day of presentations, dialogue, and breakout sessions that are rich with insight and guidance from women who are leaders for those who are, and aspire to be, leaders.

Attorney Lisa A. Coppola, founder of The Coppola Firm, will discuss creating “The Strategic Plan.” Ursuline R. Bankhead, Ph.D., an area psychologist and implicit bias consultant, will discuss “Understanding Your Inner Script.”

The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion of the event theme. The panelists are: • Sherrie Barr Mack, co-owner and managing partner, The MackBarr Group • Danielle Bergman, assistant director, Veteran Affairs WNY Healthcare System • Elisabeth Dexter, M.D., thoracic surgeon, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center • Katie Krawczyk, chief executive officer, 19 Ideas • Bridget Niland, director of Project Play WNY, Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo • Kristen Robillard, M.D., managing partner, Lakeshore Primary Care Associates • Kathleen Sweet, attorney and partner, Gibson McAskill & Crosby

Attendees may then attend one of three breakout sessions to encourage further discussion of the themes and issues explored during the presentations and panel discussion. The sessions are titled “Caught in the Middle,” “Keepin’ On,” and “Movin’ On.” Visit the Facebook page or website for more information!

The conference will be held Sept. 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Canisius College Science Building, 1901 Main Street in Buffalo. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Tickets are $35, or $10 for students.

Are you considering bringing a new furry family member into your home. Well than WNY Furtastic Adopt A Thon has a great event for you to attend. We have created an event where animal shelters, rescues and foster networks can come together under one roof to spotlight the adoptable animals currently in their care. This will offer a one stop shopping experience to potential adopters looking to fall in love and bring home a new best friend. Every pet adopted will receive a free microchip and registration courtesy of the Erie County Health Department, and an adopter goodie bag.

There are millions of pets that will end up in shelters in North America this year. About half of those pets will be euthanized due to overpopulation. Every pet adopted at this event will mean two lives were saved. The pet that has been adopted and the one that we’ve created a space for whether it be at a local shelter, within a loving foster home or safely in the hands of a rescue. With your help, this event will build awareness to the plight of homeless pets and help to save lives.

Please join WNY Furtastic on Saturday September 21st from 10am – 3 at the Pvt. Leonard Post Jr. 2450 Walden Ave, Cheektowaga, New York 14225. WNY Furtastic is a 501c3 that has put forth a collaborative effort joining local animal groups, rescues and fosters networks in a fun and enjoyable experience you can’t find anywhere else! Our goal is to find forever homes for a substantial number of animals in a limited amount of time.

Visit our website www.WNYfurtastic.org or our Facebook page WNY’s Furtastic ADOPT A THON for a link to the various rescues and adoptable pets attending. If you see a dog, cat, puppy or kitten you fall in love with, make an online application to that particular rescue to be pre-approved prior to the September 21st, adopt a thon. Please remember DON’T SHOP ADOPT

People have always understood what happens when they go for a reading from a psychic or a medium. But did you ever want to know how they do it? Each medium and psychic has a different method by which they open themselves up to receive messages. This party will give you the chance to ask those questions you may have always wanted to ask but were not sure if you should.

“Mediumship is the innate ability to communicate to those in Spirit. I am a ‘mediator of messages’ between you and those who have passed.” – Kelly Wahl

The party will be in two parts. First, a question and answer session. Any audience member can ask a question to any medium. Kelly Wahl, Kathleen Bouthillier, Suzanne Suchan, and Reverend Ellen Bourn will discuss how their gifts work. After the question and answer session, there will be a quick break. The party will then resume with gallery readings for the attendees by all four mediums.

There will be an hors d’oeuvres and cocktail hour where you can mingle with friends and the mediums before the party begins. Each person will be given one free drink ticket, and drinks will be available for purchase throughout the session. There will also be raffles for Readings, crystals, and other spiritual goodies available. $60.00 presale tickets can be purchased from Eventbrite.com, or you can call 716.431.4555 to purchase. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $65.00

Amy McCarley is set to celebrate the recent release of her album, MECO, at the Sportsmen’s Tavern on September 22nd. Tickets are $5 at the door. Doors are at 1 p.m. and the show is from 2-4 p.m.

McCarley’s album MECO traces her experience of what it’s been like leaving life as a NASA contractor to pursue a career in music. On the road, she has shared stages with Ronnie Milsap, John Hiatt, Doyle Bramhall II, Marty Stuart, Lilly Hiatt, Delta Rae, and many others, and has graced festival stages such as Kerrville Folk Festival, 30A Songwriters Festival, EarleFest, and more.

Uniquely relatable, McCarley’s music is embraced by Americana fans across the country and abroad. Americana Music Show praised MECO, saying the album “demonstrates beyond doubt that Amy McCarley has established a clear flightpath in Americana music with her blend of country rock sung with a world weariness that immediately brings to mind Lucinda Williams… in MECO she has reached an elevation that deserves a wider acclaim to propel her musical voyage.”  Country Standard Time called it a “can’t miss effort,” while The Morton Report proclaimed that “the record should propel McCarley into the big time at least as quickly as a NASA rocket launches a capsule into space. It combines mainstream accessibility with the sort of authenticity and depth you’d associate with artists like Lucinda Williams.” Lonesome Highway praised the album, calling it “superb” and lauding McCarley for her “strong and expressive voice that can display presentiment and positivity equally.”  And Take Effect Reviews extolled the “reflective spirit and emotional honesty that’s very transparent… each song is carefully crafted and delivered with a pensive, gorgeous timelessness.”

MAN MAN is a highly revered, avant-garde rock band born out of the weird streets of Philadelphia and now brewing in the even weirder sunshine of Los Angeles. The band sounds nothing like but is frequently compared to some of the more well-known godfathers of the genre, Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, Can, and The Residents. The ever-evolving ensemble mixes and mashes a variety of genres from ragtime to rock, electronic to acoustic, doo-wop to exorcism and it revels in defying classifications, expectations, and anything remotely cliché. Still, what emerges from that mixture are beautifully crafted little pop earworms that can’t easily be dislodged from your brain. Man Man is known for its multi-instrumental style that centers around the piano abusing lead singer, songwriter, and creative force Honus Honus. The other members play a number of important roles, from wielding clavinets and marimbas to a variety of wind instruments, random toys, and noisemakers. The band famously engaging live shows often feel fee and formless, as each musical number morphs into the next without a break, while its musicians quickly change instruments – and often costumes – as the mood and music dictates.

Peter Mulvey has been a songwriter, road-dog, raconteur and almost-poet since before he can remember. Raised working-class Catholic on the Northwest side of Milwaukee, he took a semester in Ireland, and immediately began cutting classes to busk on Grafton Street in Dublin and hitchhike through the country, finding whatever gigs he could. Back stateside, he spent a couple years gigging in the Midwest before lighting out for Boston, where he returned to busking (this time in the subway) and coffeehouses. Small shows led to larger shows, which eventually led to regional and then national and international touring. The wheels have not stopped since.

Eighteen records, one illustrated book, thousands of live performances, a TEDx talk, a decades-long association with the National Youth Science Camp, opening for luminaries such as Ani DiFranco, Emmylou Harris, and Chuck Prophet, appearances on NPR, an annual autumn tour by bicycle, emceeing festivals, hosting his own boutique festival (the Lamplighter Sessions, in Boston and Wisconsin)… Mulvey never stops. He has built his life’s work on collaboration and on an instinct for the eclectic and the vital. He folds everything he encounters into his work: poetry, social justice, scientific literacy, and a deeply abiding humanism are all on plain display in his art.

Early in 2017, a series of upheavals found Mulvey living through a winter in a friend’s empty house in the small Midwestern town of Fort Atkinson. Unmoored and lost in the middle of his life, walking hours each day, sometimes with friends but most often alone, along the frozen marsh of the Bark river and through the wintry oak savannah nearby. The songs came in fast and strange and vivid. At night he wrote them down at a table in the spare house, just a mile from the Cafe Carpe (which Mulvey describes as his spiritual home). These songs became his new record, “There Is Another World,” a vivid dreamscape of imagistic, haiku-like auditory sketches, within which are plenty of wrenching, haunting, and even sweet songs.

Diana Chittester stands on stage with an arsenal of acoustic guitars. Whether she’s solo or with her 4-piece band, the show is always brought to life with signature percussive multi-part playing, mimicking a full band on a solo acoustic guitar without the use of gadgets or a looper. She blends her intricate finger-picking guitar style with intelligent and articulate lyrics. The personal stories and vulnerability she shares on stage resonate with audiences as she invites them along on her journey.

Music Connection Magazine noted her “intelligent and articulate lyrics” on the review of her first full-length album, In This Skin (2012). Dubbed a “Guitar God” by Skinny Devil Magazine and “a complex guitar acrobat” by ArtVoice Magazine, in 2017 she was invited to perform on the “Cellar Sessions” series recorded live at City Winery in NYC. Diana tours regularly in the US and Canada including folk-rock venues such as The Ark, Music Box Supper Club, Rockwood Music Hall and Performing Arts Centers across the Midwest. Her latest album is Paradox, which is available now.

Zach Nugent’s Disco Dead: Zach Nugent’s playing is soulful, rootsy and organic, the kind of sound that grows out of the music naturally and effortlessly. He gigs almost nightly, singing and improvising in different projects around town and around the country. A lifelong Grateful Dead fan, Zach has a musical resume with that one vital, matchless feature: As far back as he can remember, music has been an integral part of his life.

As former guitarist for Jerry Garcia Band, Zach Nugent’s sound is soulful and organic. His musical roots grow out of the melodies naturally and effortlessly.

Disco Dead: It usually only takes one show to understand why Zach Nugent is one of the most sought after guitarists in the live music scene. On his days off from touring as de-facto Garcia expert with Melvin Seals & JGB, he continues to build his dedicated following, putting together and leading multifaceted groups for special runs and festival appearances. Never one to shy away from new and challenging ideas, Nugent is now touring his latest incarnation, Disco Dead, for a national fall tour. Fans can expect a night full of disco infused classic Grateful Dead, and a fresh surprise every show.

Paige Allison Healing Arts and the Compass Performing Arts Center are proud to be presenting “Emotional Baggage” by Lindsay Price. Recently seen at the Buffalo Infringement Festival, “Emotional Baggage” is a 30 minute one-act play without words. Each character has their own baggage to deal with. We see how this baggage impacts their movements and lives.

This piece is presented with a 30-minute guided meditation to help each audience member explore the baggage they might be carrying and give them a method for releasing it. This presentation invites you to “Mind Your Baggage”, allowing you to see and shed your emotional baggage with our performance and guided meditation.

We live in a world where it is normalized to carry the pain and burdens of our past with us in each moment. When we live with the weight of the world on our shoulders, life becomes a monotonous exercise in futility. However, when we are able to immerse ourselves in the present moment through music, art and self-expression, we can release ourselves from the weight we carry and life becomes a joyous journey. It is the hope of those involved with this production that one day all of humanity will live with the effervescence that comes from healing the wounds of the past and existing fully present in each moment. With luck, this project will encourage us all to remember that each person has their own baggage and to honestly evaluate our own. Ultimately, each person is responsible for their own baggage and their choice to hold on to it or release it. What do you choose?

The decision to produce this show with a Guided Meditation experience to take the audience further into the topic was an easy one after the talk backs following the presentation of this piece at the Buffalo Infringement Festival. This meditation provides a platform for the audience to explore the topic within themselves, while allowing the experience to be personal and private. Beyond self exploration, the meditation includes a process for releasing the baggage within. Those who attend the production will be provided a copy of the meditation, so that they can utilize this tool whenever it is supportive to do so.

Friday, September 27th: Join us for our six-year anniversary party featuring Magic Beans w/ Cycles & Eggy !

We’ll have bar specials all night and many other surprises! Come on out and celebrate six amazing years!

About Magic Beans: The Magic Beans are a band sprouted from the cultural island of Colorado that are set out to bring their unique, genre-blending music to the masses and inspire good times. In the modern age, where things are no longer quite as black and white; the Beans strive to be as inclusive as possible by skirting the lines between many genres within their unique sound. Music can encompass so many different feels and emotions and it is the band’s goal to incorporate as much of it as they can into their sound and sometimes even one composition. Listeners are left with a danceable ode to funk, rock, bluegrass, americana, livetronica, world, prog, and more. Fans have effectively dubbed the genres they hear as spacefunk, ameritronica, and groovegrass.

Today’s modern music listener no longer defines themselves within one genre, in favor of enjoying as much diversity as they can. It is upon this new musical paradigm of inclusivity that the Beans have grown one of the largest fanbases in their region, the self-named “Team Bean”. The group uses no pre-recorded tracks or samples in favor of a more traditional approach to music; original songwriting and continually pushing the envelope are what have set this group apart. Seamlessly combining traditional genres with modern dance music, The Magic Beans strive to be original and expressive of the modern music lover.

The Magic Beans have shared the stage with an eclectic group of musicians: ranging from String Cheese Incident, Umphrey’s McGee, Lotus, Disco Biscuits, Leftover Salmon, ALO, The Motet, to acts like Railroad Earth, Kyle Hollingsworth Band, Great American Taxi, Twiddle, Dopapod, Zac Deputy, Elephant Revival, Greensky Bluegrass, Split Lip Rayfield, Juno What, Papadosio, & The Werks just to name a few. They’ve performed over 400 shows as group across the nation, selling out venues as they go. They host the annual Beanstalk Music Festival in Colorado which sells out every year and plays host to international, national, and regional acts of all kinds.

Cycles Cycles epitomize the power-trio format with ripping guitar, fat bass grooves played out through furious slapping, and viciously dynamic drum beats flowing over intricate tempo changes. Each member wields a unique take on their instrument that when played together, forms a truly fresh and cohesive sound. Patrick Harvey commands the guitar with speed and precision reminiscent of Jimmy Herring while using his loop pedal virtually as its own instrument, a skill unique only to him. At the heart of the band lies Tucker McClung’s dominant slap-bass chops that captivates audiences and pumps the musical blood through the band. The recent addition of drummer, Collin O’Brien has brought new fire and life into band. With swift chops, fierce fills and decisive tempo, Collin has only further intensified the already explosive sound that is Cycles.

The current incarnation of the ever-developing sound of Cycles reveals itself today as a speeding freight train of sound and rhythm. Screaming peaks and balanced grooves find their way out of the chaos of a jam while samples ripped from the likes of Madonna, Lil Nas X and many more ring out and grab the unsuspecting audience by surprise, adding to the multicolored blend of sound filling a room and often standing out as comedic elements of the show. Drawing influence from artists such as Rage Against the Machine, J. Dilla, Primus, Weather Report, and many more, Cycles fuse an eclectic blend of genres to produce an original sound that has become harder and harder to find. Although only a few years old, Cycles have over 250 shows under their belt with tours extending across the entire U.S. A heavy touring schedule keeps them on their toes while providing the inspiration to continue to write and always strive to play better. Look out for their name soon on a festival schedule in your hands or a club marquee playing with your favorite bands.

It’s difficult to impart the roots-steeped, road-trippin’ essence of the Adam Ezra Group into a single word, but frontman Adam Ezra nonetheless keeps one in mind as something of a mantra: community.

To the musicians at the heart of AEG, community is epitomized by a belief they all share, one that has long doubled as a mission statement for the group: namely, that making music together is itself a form of grassroots organizing, capable of nothing less than changing the world.

That Ezra and his bandmates hold sacred such an inclusive approach to their craft helps explain the gathering storm of an album that is “Hurricane Wind,” one of AEG’s most ambitious undertakings to date. Not only fan-funded, but also fan-produced, the project found the broader AEG fan community playing a role in every step of the process from inception to its release on May 21st 2017.

Such a groundbreaking form of collaboration makes all the sense in the world for a musical collective like AEG. After all, as Ezra sees it, the fans are really part of the band, active members of their movement who’ve always exercised a critical role in AEG’s ability to carry out its mission. This inclusive approach to musicianship, centered about respecting and celebrating their listeners above all else, Ezra insists, is what has allowed the group to explode out of their Boston-area origins to emerge as one of the most uniquely powerful, relentlessly entertaining live-music experiences in the country.

AEG’s grassroots efforts recently caught the eye of John Oates, of Hall & Oates fame. For the past year and a half, Ezra and Oates have been regular writing partners, meeting up in Nashville between tours. Three of their co-writes are featured on the upcoming Adam Ezra Group album, and Oates himself joined Ezra in the studio to sing and play on the album. They performed their first co-written song, “All I Am”, live in-studio as an acoustic duet, a process also shared with fans, who were invited along for a virtual tour of the studio as well as granted access to unreleased studio performances.

Last December, AEG galvanized their community partnership by releasing 23 studio demos to fans, including multiple collaborations with Oates. Ezra established an innovative framework through which fans could follow the process of song arrangement and studio tracking, help whittle the album down to just 11 polished final cuts, steer artwork creation, and assist in naming the project itself.

The now-released album, “Hurricane Wind,” speaks to an elemental, overpowering force of nature, a quality AEG believes exists in every human being and can be magnified through the unifying power of music.

When the record arrived on May 21, the AEG fanbase turned the full power of its collective hurricane wind outward, and shared the music for free with over 5000 people over the course of two weeks. Such a groundswell of activity wouldn’t have been possible even a few years ago; “Hurricane Wind,” to AEG, represents both a celebration and reaffirmation of how remarkably that community has grown.

Even amid ballooning success, Ezra says it’s been not just easy, but natural for AEG to stay dedicated to its mission and true to its humble roots. Perhaps no song sums this up more than a fan favorite, selected to anchor the new album. Called “I Believe,” it’s a gorgeously layered, nakedly emotional ode to the long path they’ve already traveled as a community – and to the wide-open road ahead.

You’ve got a style, that comes on like a hurricane wind,” sings Ezra on the track, backed by a group of musicians all equally engrossed in the material and attuned to its significance.

“You’ve got a spark, that lights the fire that never ends.” With his next lines, Ezra speaks not only to the internal maxim that keeps him moving, but also to the enduring force for hope and change that his band has come to symbolize to its ever-swelling fanbase: “And in the times when hope is gone, you give me the strength to carry on – I know the path is long, but I believe.”

Many local vendors will also be on hand with wonderful products to taste (mead, anyone?) and sample. Enjoy the wide variety of flavors that honey can develop, depending on where and when it is harvested or test out some handmade lip balms and skin creams. Visitors are sure to find a handmade treat to bring home while supporting local beekeepers and businesses! Masterson’s Garden Center is located at 725 Olean Rd. in East Aurora, just south of historic Main Street. Visit Masterson’s website (mastersons.net) for more information and a schedule of events.

The Buffalo Houseplant Swap Group (find us on Facebook) has grown to over 600 members in 8 short months! Our first meetup event in June of 2019 was such a success, that we’re doing it again – this time in a bigger space.

Meet and trade with some of the plantiest people in Buffalo, ask a plant expert all of your burning houseplant care questions, and enjoy refreshments provided by some generous partners. Attendees will also have a chance to win some incredible door prizes, provided by the area’s best plant sellers!

Plant Swap Tips: Please make sure your plants are disease- and pest-free. Label your plants with the common AND botanical (Latin) names before the event. Try to bring harder-to-find plants. The more interesting your plants, the more people will want to swap for them! Bring a tray or bag to carry your plants to and from the event.

Arts on Ridge is an annual festival celebrating the local arts, diversity, and small business. A portion of Ridge Road between South Park and Franklin closes for the day to celebrate art, food, and a variety of performances!

Arts on Ridge is made possible thanks to a number of community stakeholders who decided that it was time for this part of town to celebrate its commercial and cultural attributes. About LIVE AT THE FILLMORE, a tribute to the Allman Brothers: “LIVE AT THE FILLMORE is the continuation of my devotion to performing the music of the original Allman Brothers Band as it was performed in those early years before the untimely deaths of Duane and Berry Oakley and the departure of Dickey Betts. For me, those years were the ‘glory days’ of the Allman Brothers Band. Unlike others who believe the band was a jam band, I share the view of Gregg Allman, who has been quoted as recently as 2003 by fellow band member Butch Trucks in stating that rather than being a jam band The Allman Brothers are “a band that jams”.

My perspective on the music is that rather than completely free-form in its structure, form and content it is a body of work largely composed after much trial and error and ‘jamming’ in order to extract those elements which ultimately became part of the finished songs. Anyone like myself who had the good fortune to hear the Allman Brothers shows ‘back in the day’ on the same or successive nights will corroborate that though they did leave room for improvisation and personal expression, for the most part the songs remained the same. This has continued to be my approach to performing their music.

Along with the other highly talented and committed musicians in LIVE AT THE FILLMORE, this is my attempt to bring back authentically the performances of the original Allman Brothers Band for those who were there to hear and still remember them along with those who have a similar love of this music and wish they had been there with us. We hope you enjoy listening to LIVE AT THE FILLMORE!” -Lou Maresca, founding member

About Church Of Cash: Jay Ernest formed Church of Cash in sunny Honolulu back in 2010. With an uncanny grasp of the Man in Black’s catalog and many years of experience touring the United States, Europe, and Asia, Jay has returned to his Minnesota home to spread the gospel of one of the world’s most important and enduring songwriters.

The Church of Cash is true to the music of Johnny Cash, and singer Jay’s deep baritone voice sings like a prairie breeze and stomps like a boot heel. Church of Cash is not a country band. Church of Cash is a tribute band with the express purpose of honoring the indelible legacy of Johnny Cash. Road-tested and always road-ready, The Church of Cash is celebrating the soul of American music.
